1940s US car pundits won’t fail to notice the striking resemblance the Peugeot 203 bears to the 1941 Chevrolet Fleetline: Indeed, development for what was to become Peugeot’s first successful post-war family car had begun as early as 1942, but its presentation was delayed due to WWII until 1947. A truly modern car at its launch, it was the first Peugeot to feature a monocoque body, and also came with independent front suspension and a four-speed gearbox, fully synchronized after 1954. Its four-cylinder 1.3 litre engine had a light metal cylinder head and produced 31 kW (42 hp) at first, later upgraded to 33 kW (45 hp). While the 4-door saloon was by far the most common variant, there were plenty of other body types available, including convertible, coupé and station wagon. Models after 1953 are easily recognized by their fuel filler cap hidden under a flap, as opposed to the protruding type on earlier models. Not least due to its exemplary reliability, the 203 proved highly successful both in France, as well as in the export markets, and remained in production until 1960, with a total of 685,828 units built, most of them at Sochaux, some in Australia. Engine and running gear were even allowed to live on for another couple of years in the Peugeot 403.
