Her majesty princess Margaret had one, guru Bhagwan Shree Rajneesh had dozens of them, and if you wish, you too can now become proud owner of a fascinating Rolls-Royce Silver Shadow.
Originally delivered to the US, the bicolour luxury sedan has recently been imported to Germany.
Sadly, the Shadow has not been princely maintained, resulting in a somewhat longish to-do list.
It comes with the 6.2 litre V8 producing around 147 kW (200 hp) of power – estimated, since the RR company would not disclose something so vulgar as the engine’s output. All the amenities of a late sixties Rolls-Royce are there, including power windows front and rear, electric seats, armrest and radio. The original vehicle tool kit is in the boot. The radiator mascot is not original.
Due to numerous deficiencies regarding body and running gear, the vehicle is being offered as a restoration project/ salvage car.
The first modern Rolls – nobility as a cure against aging?
Unlike its predecessor, the lush (or we may say bombastic?) Silver Cloud, which was “old school” throughout, the straight-line Silver Shadow was a modern, almost revolutionary appearance in 1965. It had a monocoque chassis, which allowed for a more generous interior despite smaller exterior dimensions, as well as hydropneumatic independent wheel suspension and a three-circuit brake system with disc brakes – all of which had hitherto been unheard of in a Rolls-Royce.
In 15 years of construction (including the 1977 facelift) over 29,000 units of this elegant luxury sedan were built, four times as many as the previous model. What they all have in common, apart from the big V8 (6.2 litres first / 6.7 liters later), is primarily one thing: The noble sovereignty as it can only be found in a Rolls-Royce. And where, if not in reference to this clear styling, can the somewhat hackneyed expression “timeless” be more aptly applied?
