The Arnage was conceived at a time when the brands Rolls-Royce and Bentley were part of the Vickers Group. Following the tradition, there was a structurally identical twin model by Rolls-Royce, the Silver Seraph. A break with tradition, however, was the decision not to use their own engines, but to buy them in addition from BMW.
However, no sooner had the Arnage been presented, when the takeover battle for the brands Bentley and Rolls-Royce began between BMW and the Volkswagen Group, which eventually resulted in Bentley moving to VW and BMW taking over the rights to the Rolls-Royce brand name. In order not to have to use the engine of the competitor, the long-standing 6.75 litre V8 was hastily revised and updated. The Arnage thus became significantly heavier and thirstier, but also more robust. In 2001 the engine was once more thoroughly revised and improved in performance to 405 hp, later versions offered up to 507 hp and a torque of stunning 1,000 Nm. In 2009, the Mulsanne made its debut as successor to the Arnage.
